Directorate General of Heritage of Portugal, Romanian Cultural Institute in Lisbon and Bonte Foundation present, between 12th of May and 30th of August 2016, the Modern Romanian Painting Exhibition (1875-1945) – Bonte Foundation Collection, held at the National Palace Ajuda, Lisbon.
Bonte Collection is a genuine Romanian modern art gallery, bringing together works by some of the most valuable artists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: Nicolae Grigorescu, Gheorghe Petraşcu, Adam Baltatu, Camil Ressu, Iosif Iser, Theodor Pallady, Nicolae Dărăscu, Francisc Şirato, Alexandru Ciucurencu, Nicolae Vermont, Vasile Popescu, Hippolytus Strâmbu, Kimon Login, Arthur Verona, Dimitrescu Stephen, Stephen Smith, Leo. Biju, Theodorescu Sion, Samuel Mützner, Rodica Maniu, Magdalena Rădulescu, Constantin Isachie, Dumitru Ghiaţă, Rudolf Schweitzer- Cumpăna, Jean Cheller. The work selection is not only a true sample of a collector’s passion, but ultimately a rare devotion to a cultural cause and a high faith – practiced while with professional arguments professional – that the Romanian fine arts deserve to be properly known across the national borders as well.
Alain Bonte, Honorary Consul of Romania in Portugal, discovered modern Romanian paintings by elaborately prospecting modern painting museums, galleries and collections. Meanwhile, his familiarity to the Romanian plastic art proved to be the basis of an impressive collection of paintings, which today forms the backdrop of the Bonte Foundation. A very good connoisseur of European art, endowed with intuition and precious taste, distinguished diplomat and businessman, investigates and finds artists that spark interest, makes connections and inferences, understands lineages and manages to bring together a representative collection of the great currents that marked the Romanian painting of the late nineteenth century to the years leading communist regime. Gradually, occasional purchases of the Foundation acquire a scale up a specialized art gallery.
Highly familiar with the collection, the Romanian Cultural Institute and the Romanian Embassy in Portugal decided to capitalize the merits and the intentions of the valuable collection. A new dimension has been added to the by involving Ajuda National Palace in Lisbon, a Portuguese first class cultural institution, located in the tourist circuit. Former residence for the kings of Portugal since the late eighteenth century, Ajuda National Palace is now headquarters for a museum, a huge library and the Ministry of Culture of Portugal.
Starting May, 12th , paintings from the Bonte Collection will be placed in the museum with the aim of showing the Portuguese public an eloquent moment of the maximum flowering of the Romanian culture.
At the opening, planned to start at 19:00 the following guests will take the floor: Mrs. Paula Silva, Head of the Directorate of Heritage in Portugal, Mr. Radu Boroianu, President of the Romanian Cultural Institute, Mr. José Alberto Ribeiro, Director of the National Palace Ajuda, Mr. Alain Bonte, President Bonte Foundation, Mr. Adrian Curaj, Minister for Education and Research in Romania, Mr. Luis Filipe Castro Mendes, Minister of Culture of Portugal, Mr.Vasile Popovici, Romanian ambassador in Portugal, Portuguese and Romanian officials numerous will be attending the event.
On the 11th of May, at 11:00 Ajuda National Palace will hold a Press Conference to be attended by organizers and Doina Păuleanu, director of Muzelle Art Constanța, curator of the exhibition and author of the catalog presentation.

A DGPC, o Instituto Cultural Romeno em Lisboa e a Fundação Bonte apresentam, entre 12 de maio e 30 de agosto, no Palácio Nacional da Ajuda, a exposição Pintura romena moderna (1875-1945). Acervo da Fundação Bonte.
A Coleção Bonte é uma verdadeira galeria de arte moderna romena, que reúne pinturas de alguns dos mais valiosos artistas dos séculos XIX e XX.
A história da sua criação não conta apenas a paixão de um colecionador, mas também uma rara devoção por uma causa cultural e de fé – exercitada no tempo, com argumentos profissionais – que a arte plástica romena merece e deve ser conhecida verdadeiramente além-fronteiras.
Chegado à Roménia para explorar oportunidades de negócios, Alain Bonte, hoje em dia cônsul honorário da Roménia em Portugal, descobre a pintura moderna romena através de uma prospeção atenta dos museus, das galerias e das coleções de arte já existentes.
Com o passar do tempo, a sua familiarização com a arte plástica romena concretizou-se na criação de uma coleção impressionante de quadros, que constitui atualmente o acervo da Fundação Bonte. Bom conhecedor da arte europeia, munido de intuição e bom gosto, o distinto diplomata e homem de negócios pesquisa e encontra os artistas que poderiam despertar o seu interesse, faz conexões, compreende filiações e consegue constituir uma coleção representativa dos grandes movimentos artísticos que marcaram a pintura romena do fim do século XIX até à instauração do período comunista, em 1945. Pouco a pouco, as aquisições ocasionais da Fundação ganham proporção programática, tornando-se representativas e constituindo uma verdadeira pinacoteca especializada.
Ao tomar conhecimento da coleção, o Instituto Cultural Romeno e a Embaixada da Roménia em Portugal decidiram valorizá-la de acordo com o seu mérito e com as intenções que a fizeram nascer.
O presente projeto ganhou uma nova dimensão através da parceria com o Palácio Nacional da Ajuda, instituição portuguesa de primeira linha, situada no circuito turístico e cultural “obrigatório” da capital portuguesa.
No espaço de cariz real serão apresentados, a partir de 12 de maio, quadros da Coleção Bonte (assinados por pintores como: Nicolae Grigorescu, Gheorghe Petraşcu, Camil Ressu, Iosif Iser, Theodor Pallady, Nicolae Dărăscu, Francisc Şirato, Alexandru Ciucurencu, Nicolae Vermont, Ipolit Strâmbu, Kimon Loghi, Arthur Verona, Ştefan Dimitrescu, Ştefan Popescu, Leon Al. Biju, Ion Theodorescu-Sion, Samuel Mützner, Rodica Maniu, Magdalena Rădulescu, Adam Baltatu, Vasile Popescu, Constantin Isachie, Dimitrie Ghiaţă, Rudolf Schweitzer-Cumpăna, Henri Catargi, Jean Cheller que proporcionarão ao público português um panorama eloquente do momento de máximo florescimento da cultura romena.
Na véspera da inauguração, o Palácio Nacional de Ajuda organizará uma conferência de imprensa (quarta-feira, 11 de maio, às 11h00) que contará com a presença dos organizadores e da Senhora Doina Păuleanu, diretora do Museu de Arte de Constança, curadora da exposição e autora do catálogo de apresentação
